Old

Reading: KO, furui
Strokes: 5

Etymology: The lower character is mouth.  The upper character is ten.*

Mnemonic: AN OLD STORY, TOLD AT LEAST TEN TIMES.

* Actually an inaccurate explanation.  Earlier characters were of a skull-like mask, which was worn at festivals and ceremonies.  Skull gave the meaning of old.

Combinations:

復古 (fukko): restoration
古本 (furuhon): secondhand book

(Based upon Henshall, 1998)
