Kanji structure (7)

Hanging or trailing radical:

These radicals often depict a building, but can also mean sickness.

Example 1:

(ま)meaning hemp, is a combination of the radical for building + a pictograph of hemp plants hanging to dry.

Example 2:

疫(えき/やく)meaning epidemic, contains the meaning for strike within sickness.

Thus, the sickness that strikes many people in succession is an epidemic.

Note:  Strike also gives the character's phonetic reading.

A semiotic-phonetic character.
