Four Kanji Types (#1)

The Pictograph (shokei moji):

These are pictures of the object they represent.  Very simple!
  1. 木 (き- tree)
  2. 月 (つき - moon)
  3. 馬 (うま - horse)
Well, tree and moon do look like a tree and the moon, but horse?  With a stretch of your imagination, and remembering that kanji have changed over 1000s of years from the originals, I bet you can see the four legs and long, horsey face:-).
(Based upon Henshall, 1998)
