The sign / symbol (shiji moji)


Shiji moji characters express abstract concepts:

1. 上（うえ - up）
2. 下（した - down）
3. 回（まわる - turn） 

Like pictographs, these characters can be learned without too much effort.

Some scholars debate whether a character is a pictograph or a symbol:

• 一（いち - one）for example.  

I'll leave these debates to the scholars.  I'm simply glad to know these characters:-).
